Technical writing.

Before managing iFixit’s technical writing team, I wrote dozens of step-by-step repair guides for products ranging from consumer electronics to outdoor power equipment. I crafted the research, photographs, and instructions in these guides.

Style Guide

I created a style guide when I took over the technical writing team at iFixit, resulting in more consistent repair documentation and quicker onboarding for new technical writers.

Guru API Documentation

I noticed Guru’s API documentation was missing an endpoint, so I created documentation for my own reference until Guru updates their own resources.

Content writing.

I began my career as a writer over 10 years ago, and have written all kinds of content, including news, reviews, tutorials, explainers, and op-eds, with specialties in tech, DIY, and lifestyle. I've published thousands of articles, so instead of creating an infinite-scrolling mess on this page, here are just a handful of pieces I'm particularly fond of.

The Oil Test That Tells You If Your Car Is Slowly Killing Itself

At iFixit, I took apart cool gadgets to show what’s inside and how they work. These projects were a team effort, but my biggest contribution was the informative and entertaining writing.

iFixit Manufacturer Solutions

I created this page as we were planning to work more with outside clients. I worked with our sales team on messaging and our editorial team on copyediting. Shortly after we launched this expansion, we were able to fully book the rest of 2021 and all of 2022 with client work.

Which iFixit Driver Kit Should You Buy?

This promotional blog post outlines the differences between our various toolkits, which is a question we’re asked constantly by customers as we continue to grow our toolkit offerings. I created this piece of content not only for SEO purposes, but also for the marketing team to link from in newsletters, landing pages, emails, etc.

Project management.

I’ve managed multiple projects working with numerous consumer and enterprise hardware manufacturers. From initial briefing to launch day and beyond, I’ve been directly responsible for the day-to-day management of a wide gamut of projects, ranging from a couple weeks with a single deliverable, to several months with multiple deliverables involving many team.

  • Repair documentation for tool rental centers.

This client (the U.S.’s largest home improvement retailer) hired our team to create repair documentation for their tool rental center service technicians. I inherited this project in the early stages when it was still in its trial phase. I was tasked to transition the project into full production, consistently creating 30 repair guides per month by our technical writing team. I implemented scalable processes that allowed the team to deliver the work more quickly and efficiently, making it one of our most profitable ongoing projects at the time.

  • Point-of-sale hardware repairability analysis.

For this project with over 40 stakeholders, we disassembled and analyzed the repairability of various point-of-sale (PoS) payment terminals from a number of major PoS hardware manufacturers. I worked with the client to determine critical components and major focus points. This was our first project in this product category, so I was tasked to manage a lot of unknowns and risks, as well as handle device procurement. By planning for contingencies, we were able to deliver our results on time and presented our analysis to the client and their engineering teams. The client expressed how valuable this information was, and it helped give them a better idea of how to design their products going forward.

  • Repair videos for a large hardware manufacturer.

We worked with a major consumer and enterprise hardware manufacturer to create disassembly videos for four of their flagship laptops and tablets. This project required regular weekly meetings and daily email communication with the client, due to the technical, yet creative nature of the work. It also required a lot of scope management skills and flexibility to meet the client's needs. These videos are used by all of the manufacturer’s authorized service providers in five different languages to help them repair broken devices.

Video/audio production.

Over the years I’ve spent a considerable amount of time creating audio and video content in different forms, both professionally and in my personal life.

Repair Radio podcast

I produced, co-hosted, and edited eight episodes of Repair Radio, iFixit's official podcast, from August 2019 to November 2019. It has since been discontinued.

I created this personal video in 2017 showcasing my first trip to Disneyland.

I hosted—and wrote the scripts for—two videos on iFixit’s YouTube channel, which has over one million subscribers. Both videos collectively have over 300K views.

Appearances.

Quotes in news articles and appearances on the radio.

T-Online

I was quoted by German publication T-Online about the illusion of waterproof phones.

Popular Science

I was quoted in a Popular Science article about why and when you should replace your laptop’s battery.

I made two appearances on CBC Radio discussing Apple's software limitation on third-party (and even OEM) iPhone battery replacements, as well as the "Batterygate" controversy from 2017.

Other projects.

I like to take on other fun projects, either at work or in my personal life.

3D Printable Dice Tray

I created this simple dice tray using SketchUp, and the STL file is available on Thingiverse. The tray is designed to store seven polyhedral dice for D&D.

Clippings For Cash

I created this quick and simple web page that calculates yearly pay for clipping fingernails while on the clock. View the GitHub repo for more details.

D&D “Welcome to Phandalin” Flyer

I made this imaginary flyer for a D&D campaign that I ran. I wrote the copy from scratch and designed the flyer using The Homebrewery.

I love DIY projects, whether it’s home renovation, woodworking, wrenching, or fixing. Here are some projects I’ve done over the years. (Click each image for a cool storyboard.)

Building a fancy litter box enclosure for our cats.

Remodeling our dining room.

Remodeling our half-bathroom

Converting our coffee table into a hybrid coffee table-desk.

Here are some more random photos of fun projects I’ve worked on and things I’ve made.

My photography skills have been put to good use on the job, but I also enjoy dabbling in it for fun, and I was lucky enough to have one of my photos published in a book about roller coasters and thrill rides.
